Jon Montoya's Naples Sunset in Copper & Green took second place in the 26th Annual All Florida Show.
Colorado-born artist, I am inspired by the Gulf of Mexico, The unique natural landscape of the sub-tropics is very facinating. Many of the concepts I have been working with in the creative process (horizon-line and time-space relationships) seem to seem to be at home here with the sea.
I like to paint on large canvases in acrylics with splashes and gestural brushwork. Some of my paintings have the guiding lines that my drafting-trained mind likes to impose, but later the Muse takes over and this is when everything seems to sparkle. I try to let the landscape speak to me. Sometimes this causes the canvas to breach into abstraction. Time spent outdoors with my palette and brushes in the beauty of Southwest Florida, especially in the evening with its rich colors and dancing shadows, causes moments of euphoria - and hope this joy is visible on the canvas.
The artist recieved BA fine-art training at Metro State University Denver and an MA in Architecture from the University of Colorado.
